My new Obsession

I have recently been bitten by the quilting bug.  I made a small wall hanging at homemaking a few years ago and really liked it.  Then I got completely insane, thought I could make a quilt for our bed, with only a half-thought out plan, no template, or even exact measurements.  It didn’t exactly turn out very well, and I abandoned it, and quilting, for a long time.

But then several of the ladies in the ward got together to make a wedding quilt for a young couple and I helped a little bit.  Seeing how beautifully it all came together, and the fun we all had tying it together, made me want to try again.  Only this time with a plan, a template, and exact measurements!

I scoured the internet for quilting tutorials and watched them over and over, until I felt like I knew and understood what they were talking about, and felt reasonably confident I could copy them.  Then came the super fun part of choosing a pattern and buying material!  I let the girls help me, since I decided to make quilts for them first.  We talked about their favorite colors and then went to town doing our best to keep several online quilt stores in business.:)

It felt like Christmas, getting all those fat envelopes in the mail, stuffed full of gorgeous material.  And then finally the big box came.

It had all the templates I needed to make the quilts, plus a couple that I had planned in my head.  It also had some of the backing material for the quilts, and new blades for my rotary cutter.  I took my time reading all the instructions and gazing in wonder at all my new toys.

While I was doing this, Alexandra was chasing rainbows in her room. She is such a happy little thing, most of the time.  And so easily entertained. Can you see the rainbows in this picture?  What you can’t see is how gorgeous it looks when we spin the crystal and the rainbows go zooming all around the room.  Like nature’s disco ball!

I started on Alexandra’s quilt first.  I am really happy with how it is turning out.  The flowers came together really quickly, and then I made a border out of the leftover material.  The bit you see in the upper right corner is going to be used for a second border as well as the flower stems, maybe.  I can’t decide just yet.  Sarah’s is going to be very similar, just no yellow, and more pink!

This pile of gorgeous color is going to be Sophie’s quilt.  I think I will really enjoy making that one, as those are my favorite colors as well.  And I am extremely grateful I have such a big area to spread all this stuff out in and be able to leave it.  Makes it much easier to quilt in small blocks of time throughout the day.

So fun! The prints look great together. I can’t wait to see it in person.
