Sophie’s Recorder Recital

Seriously, this could not have been a crazier, cram-packed week!  Saturday morning the kids went to a ward Primary activity.  Only Nick stayed home since he is in Young Men’s now.  I spent my free time working on stuff for Sarah’s birthday party the next Wednesday.  But more on that later.  In the afternoon, we all went to watch Sophie at her recorder recital.

We got there just as the concert was beginning.  I had dropped off Sophie earlier, then turned around and went straight back to pick everyone else up.  But they weren’t ready to go, so we were literally running down the stairs to the school, and slipped in the door just as the teacher stood to welcome everyone to the recital.  The only seats left were on tables set up along the wall in the back.  This turned out to be a good thing for viewing the actual performances, but I couldn’t get a decent shot of Sophie waiting for her turn.  We were so far back, that even with the zoom on, the camera just kept focusing on the people in between us.  Frustrating.

Sophie performed right in the middle of the concert.  I like this, because the one time Sarah went very first, everyone tried to leave after she was done.  No, no, that’s not how concerts work, folks.  The girl next to Sophie is Lara, who she takes lessons with.  They played one song together, then Sophie played alone.  Then Lara played one piece alone, and they played a second song together.  Sophie got a little flustered because Lara played something wrong, which confused Sophie.  So then she stopped, but quickly picked back up again when she figured out what part Lara had skipped.  She wasn’t happy about it, because Sophie is a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to her playing.  She practices and practices and practices.  She has already taught herself to play one of the harder songs in the back of the book, and has plans to learn a few more over summer vacation.  I am so glad she enjoys it, and can’t wait until she can start learning flute in the 4th grade.  Apparently they have to wait until the kids’ arms are long enough?  Or something like that.

Here is a bit of her performance.
