"Pirat im Internat"

Sarah's class put on a play up at school on Friday, July 2.  When she first brought home the paper, I totally thought it was a play about internet safety.  Then I heard her singing bits of the songs at home, and realized it was about actual pirates, not computer ones.  And then it finally clicked that Internat is the German word for boarding school! smacks head in frustration  Being presented with daily evidence that my children are smarter than I am is really, really tough on the old ego, I tell you.

As is generally the norm around here, we arrived at the play just as it was starting.  We snuck around to the back of the bleachers, and Sarah and Noah climbed under the railing to the two empty chairs in the middle of the row.  Nick stood on the tables set up behind the bleachers for the cameraman, and I kind of crouched down behind him.  I actually had a pretty clear line of sight to the stage, but I wasn't looking forward to standing up for the entire play.  Fortunately, after about 15 minutes, my friend's husband, who just happened to be sitting next to Sarah and Noah, had to leave for work, so I got to have his chair. :)  Chris and Alexandra stood just outside the glass doors and watched from the lobby.  This gave him a great spot to take pictures from, and Alexandra didn't disturb any one.

The play dealt with the children of a successful (wealthy) pirate being sent off to an exclusive Swiss boarding school.

There they lived with sophisticated children of royalty, in an attempt to gain some culture and good breeding for themselves.  Unfortunately, all that happened was that the pirates ended up convincing everyone how fun it was to act like them.

It was a very cute play, with lots of catchy songs, which the children are still singing almost a month later.  Sarah played the teacher at the school, and was rather strict!

The best was when she would put her hands on her hips, appalled at the behavior of the little pirates.  I confess, I recognized myself in many of her mannerisms.

After the play was over, the children came back on stage to tumultuous applause, singing two more songs as encores.  Then we all went out on to the patio for refreshments.  The tables were decorated with adorable pirates napkins, opened up like tableclothes, and there was even a three-tiered Pirate themed petit four tray!  The children were very proud to see that the chocolate chip cookies I had brought disappeared quickly.  It was getting rather late, but the children were having so much fun playing with their friends and trying all the delicious treats that I kept talking Chris into staying just a few more minutes.  We ended up getting home 2 hours past bedtime, but it was so worth it.  Everyone really enjoyed themselves, and Sarah deserved to bask in her acting glory for as long as possible.
