Pumpkin Painting

Wednesday afternoon we all gathered around the table to paint our pumpkins.  Sarah opted to keep hers a pristine orange, and Nick declined to paint his as well.  My children form very strong attachments to their pumpkins and keep them in their rooms until they start to get soft and mushy.  Then we kiss them goodbye and toss them in the compost bin.  I don't know why they love these orange blobs so much, but they really do.  There are always a few tears when the time to toss them finally comes.  Perhaps because the only pets we have are fish, and children naturally need to love something smaller than themselves?  I don't know, but I will tell you they actually sleep with the pumpkins.  And I am the cool, understanding Mom who lets them. haha

Anyway, I got out my collection of paints and let them find just the right color they wanted to use.  I helped Amelia cut a hole in the back of her pumpkin, and she proceed to clean it out.

I asked the kids if they wanted to try and roast the seeds, but no one seemed too enthused so I just tossed them.  They were probably remembering the one year I tried to do it, and they got a bit burned and tasted absolutely horrible because I got creative with the spices.  I have eaten pumpkin seeds that tasted delicious, but have never been able to recreate the magic in my own kitchen.

Noah started to paint his pumpkin, but then decided that it looked pretty cool just the way it was.  Who can blame him? Sophie painted the larger one as the dad, and the smaller one was the baby, who ended up having the measles.  She actually painted little red dots all over him.  So cute!

And again, no pictures of all the finished pumpkins together.  I need to make a list of photos I want to take before each holiday and then mark them off as I take them.  Obviously, my addled brain can't be relied on to remember then on its own anymore.
