Happy Birthday, Nicholas!

Exactly one decade ago, Nicholas introduced us to the amazing, wonderful world of parenthood.  It didn't exactly come about the way I wanted, or even very smoothly, but it has definitely been exciting from the get go!  Just a few highlights as I stroll down memory lane.  The poor ambulance medic who was convinced his blood pressure machine was broken, and even slapped it a couple of times, then proceeded to measure my blood pressure again.  Then he ever so nonchalantly turns around and yells up to the driver, "Hey, do you think you could hurry it up there?"  Yeah, that's reassuring.   The doctor making the first cut before the second epidural has a chance to fully kick in, so I felt the whole thing.  But I wasn't upset with him, I really liked him.  (Funny side note, he was my home teacher's cousin.  Only in Utah.)  Nicholas screamed his head off when they lifted him out, even though the nurse had told us he was too small/lungs underdeveloped and probably would be silent at birth.  (I was unconscious, but Chris told me he cried later.)  Michaela took photos for us in the NICU even though they tried to shoo her out.  They are my most precious, prized photos, as I was not awake during his birth, and didn't even get to see him/hold him until he was two days old.  My parents arriving just minutes after the birth, after having driven in a panic all the way from St. George to Provo.   They said they knew everything was going to be fine when they saw Chris and the first thing he did was smile.  (I had called them, bawling hysterically I might add, from Orem Hospital before the above-mentioned ambulance ride to tell them they were taking the baby out that day, 9 weeks early.)

E.R. had been my favorite show up until that point.  Watched it without fail, every Thursday night.  Had been doing it since the first episode, pretty much.  After having starred in my own real-life episode, I couldn't bear to watch the show again for over two years.  Just brought back too much emotion and panic.

It's hard to believe Nicholas has grown from this

(This was taken the day he came home from the hospital, 6 weeks after being born.) To this

Happy birthday, my first born.  You are the best.  Thanks for making it so fun to be your mom.
