Milestones

Today Alexandra reached a big milestone in life, her first solid food.  We usually celebrate the sixth month birthday of all our babies by letting them have their first taste of rice cereal, but we were in France for Lexi's birthday.  And then I decided that really, since she was born a month early, we should wait until she was seven months old.  But today, she decided that just milk wasn't going to cut it anymore.

Xandra has been grabbing at our drinks for a while now, and you can't sit her on your lap during mealtimes either.  Unless of course you like the whole-plate-in-your-lap look.  I had nursed her in the morning when she first woke up and she ate her usual amount.  but about an hour later, she was still very fussy.  It wasn't her diaper, it wasn't time for a nap yet, it wasn't boredom as she was being entertained by both  Noah and I.  Finally out of desperation, I thought I would try some or the rice cereal.  She LOVED it.  All my other kids usually spit it out at first, and it would take a few days of trying before they decided it was an acceptable form of nourishment.  Not this girl.

She ate the entire bowl, and was grabbing the spoon since I wasn't shoveling it in fast enough, apparently.  I felt bad that Chris had missed being here, but honestly, she was so hungry I didn't know what else to do.   We can have a repeat performance tonight.  I don't think she will mind.

Baby has also been practicing her crawling.  Currently, she does more of a backwards shove, than a true crawl.  She can, however, get up on her hands and knees and put one knee forward before she flops down on her belly again.  She really gets moving on our smooth hardwood floors, and sometimes ends up backed against a wall.  One of the children will usually take pity on her, drag her back to the middle of the floor by one arm or a leg, and then off she goes again.  It's a little like those automated vacuums.

Today, she got herself in quite a predicament.  Fortunately, Noah and I were right there and saw the whole thing unfold, so she didn't have time to get scared.  Somehow, she managed to duck her head down far enough to squeeze under the couch.  It would have been the perfect hiding spot, if only we would have been playing Hide and Seek.  My baby is growing up.
