Last week Noah had his kindergarten graduation party at school. Since they have been studying the Orient for the past few months, this was also the theme of the party. His two teachers put on a hilarious little skit, pretending to be wandering around the globe, trying to find their way back home. And the camel wagon in the background was made by one of the parents. Cool, huh?
As the teachers wandered around the room, getting closer to the kids, they saw another family who had really gotten into the spirit of the evening. The whole family was dressed up and had brought a carpet to sit on and everything, so Manuela stopped and played a special song just for them on her flute.
Finally, the two travelers made it up to where the kids were sitting, also in costume. The theater continued, along with the singing of several songs.

Noah insisted on wearing his rain boots, which was an unusual choice given the temperature outside, but whatever. The most important thing was that he got to bring his headband home! 🙂 It has now been added to the dress-up box upstairs. We might have to pull it out at Christmas for one of the wise men…
Along with the invitation to the party, each family had received a recipe suggestion for the buffet. They normally don’t do that, but his teachers thought it would make the party seem more special if the food went along with the theme. For some reason, I was assigned a rather easy item; yogurt dip. So of course, I also brought a big pan of no-bake cheesecake for the dessert buffet. But that still didn’t seem like enough, so I made us 10 minutes late to the party, whipping up a shrimp pad thai. Of course, I had no tamarind paste, so it wasn’t exactly pad thai, but it was still delicious. I saw several people going back for extra helpings, and two ladies even asked me for the recipe. Thanks cooking club! 🙂
My kids only ate the pita bread and pizza. Oh and a couple falafels. It wasn’t their style of fare, but at least they didn’t complain, and the dessert was good!
Just before we needed to leave so that Chris and Nick could get to their home teaching appointment, they did the traditional ceremony to usher in the kids to first grade. Noah actually participated! None of our other kids ever wanted to. I can certainly understand their apprehension. It does look a bit crazy, and sure enough, one kid got bounced way too high, and had to be caught by a parent on the side. Oops. But no one was hurt, and they all had fun, which is the important thing.
Happily for us, Noah will be going to first grade with the same teacher that Sarah is now leaving. We know her, really like her, and are confident Noah will have just as great an experience with Frau Nicollier as he did with Frau Buchmann, and Frau Huber.
