Conference Weekend

We enjoyed some absolutely beautiful weather this weekend.  It was like summer outside, and Nick has the sunburn to prove it!  Saturday morning we went to Ikea and picked up a few things.  We need a new couch and chair for the living room, and one for the reading room.  And also a new shoe cabinet, since the hinges on the current one broke.  I tried to get new ones made by a carpenter, but after spending 50 Francs and having them still not work right, we decided to cut our losses and move on.   So we got a lot of brochures to figure out exactly what we are going to use to replace it.

We tried to come to some decision on which color the new couch should be, but that is turning out to be more difficult that anyone could imagine.  The old red isn’t made anymore, and the new red is too bright for Chris’ taste.  He hates the grey that I love, but likes the green that I detest.  Two others are too flowery for both of us, and the cream and white versions are too blah for our already blah living room.  The red couch is the only punch of color in the place.  So yeah, we are still working on that.

We came home and the kids spent the rest of the day playing outside.  Sophie did come in for a few minutes to help me make this, though. It’s strawberry tiramisu, and it was very, very good.  Even Chris couldn’t resist eating some, although he nuked it for a bit so the strawberries wouldn’t trigger a reaction.

We had bathed the kids that morning, so that we could watch the full Saturday morning session at 6, and then send them straight to bed when it was over. It was such a hot day, that they had been pretending they were at the beach right before it started.  Hence the swimming suits! We again gave the kids Conference Bingo sheets and lots of coloring pages from the friend to keep them occupied while we watched.  I love the bingo best, because they actually listen to the talks while they play.  And even better?  They all sang the rest song with the rest of the conference goers.  I am so, so, so glad my children actually look forward to, and participate in conference.  What a blessing!

Sunday morning we watched one hour from the Saturday Afternoon session, and then Chris and Nicholas left to attend the priesthood session in Winterthur.  The plan was to then grill lunch at the Badgers and then watch more conference.  Unfortunately, after we had biked/walked over there, we discovered a large group of young men already grilling.  The boys themselves weren’t the problem, it was the sheer number of them.  There wasn’t any room at all on the grill for our sausages.  So we packed up, headed back home and cooked them in the oven.   Not quite the same, but still pretty good!

Then we watched another hour of conference before letting the kids play for an hour until the Sunday Morning session started.  When we looked at the living room that evening before bed, we both shook our heads.  It was a bit like a war zone, with papers, books and crayons everywhere!  I dubbed it “conference chaos”, but it was totally worth it.

There are a couple german companies selling ikea covers in a huge variety of fun fabrics, way better than the IKEA options. I just can’t seem to find the link. Let’s look together. I need a new cover too.
