The Saturday after Thanksgiving Sarah performed in a ballet recital down in Affoltern. I was so happy that this time it would be on a Saturday, so she could participate. One of the practices, to get the lighting correct, and two other performances were on Sunday. But we just skipped the practice and her teacher already knew she would only be dancing on Saturday. It didn’t seem to be a big deal to her. Hurray! Sarah was so sad about missing the last one. She really loves to perform, and works so hard to do everything just right.
It was held in a much larger forum this time, which I was glad about. But there were no free tickets. This was an actual production! It was also about an hour long. So Chris and I discussed it and decided that just Sophie and I would attend the recital, and then we would buy a DVD of the performance that everyone could enjoy later.
I went down to the bookstore that was selling the tickets for them, the first day you could buy them. 🙂 We got two seats, front row, exactly center. It was awesome! Sophie didn’t have to try and see over anyone’s head, and we were far enough back that we didn’t have to crane our necks at all. Perfect!
Of course, Sarah had to get dropped off a bit earlier, for some last minute rehearsals and makeup. I did her hair at home. I can’t remember now what the hold up was, but Sophie and I ended up leaving home much later than we should have. Parking was a nightmare. I ended up driving up on to the sidewalk across from the school, since we didn’t have time to walk back from any great distance. Then we both ran to the auditorium as fast as we could! We made it through the doors and into our seats literally seconds before the curtains opened. Whew!
Most of the performance was really great. The little kids were especially adorable, and the costumes were simple but effective. There were a few times I had to figuratively shake my head, though. They had these tween girls dancing to hip-hop music and the song they chose was one I had purposely never listened to because it was so suggestive. I can’t even type the lyrics for fear of offending my mom. And they said them over and over and over again. Then there was some other song that was not quite as bad, but almost. They also had them dancing to something that was just upbeat and fun. Why they couldn’t choose three songs like that, I don’t know. I am sure they exist. Maybe the leaders didn’t completely understand the lyrics because they were in English? Not sure, just glad Sarah is in ballet instead!
When it was Sarah’s turn to come on stage, we saw her sneaking peeks trying to see us. I had told her before where our seats were, so she knew about where to look. I smiled at her and did a little wave, and she grinned really big back at me. 🙂 Later on in the dance, when she could sneak it in, she also gave us a little wave back. Very unprofessional, but fun nonetheless!
After the whole show, all the dancers got roses. Sarah was very excited because she actually got to take hers home right then. All the other girls had to turn theirs back in, so they could be presented with them after both performances the next day! Only after the very last show could they keep them and take them home.
